Working with Yacht Designers
To date, sailing boat hulls and masts are still being developed without the Yacht Designer being able to accurately consider the sails’ influence within the design. Moreover, Sail Plans are developed independently from the rest of the boat.
SMAR Azure have focused its technology research activities (in 2005) in developing Sail Mast technology. This significant advancement allows Yacht Designers to undertake Design and Performance Analysis of the sail-mast system, by taking into account the mutual effects of the two structures.
This gives Yacht Designers using SMAR-Azure’s software a significant advantage over their competitors as it makes a dramatic improvement in the overall accuracy of the simulations, which in turn greatly improves the effectiveness of their designs.
Sail-Mast Integrated Design System
Currently, SMAR Azure offers this technology in-house on a one-to-one basis, working with the designer as a technological partner.
The unique and innovative features are the calculations of:
- Mast-bend due to sails and stays in each desired sailing condition
- Sail-shape and luff curve due to the mast bend.
How does it work?
The technology allows you to:
1. Design the entire sail plan
2. Define the rig configuration:
MAST, by defining
- Sections
- Material
Stays configurations
- Set tensions on the stays
- Set other loads on mast: position and forces
3. Evaluate and transfer the sails forces on the mast.
4. ANALYSE:
- Mast Bend
- Bucking conditions
- Stress distribution along the mast

Future Developments
Now SMAR Azure are looking to take it a step further!
As the core technology allows the design and aero-elastic analysis of multi-sails configuration on the rig, the calculation of sails loads on the mast and the mast bend, the company is currently in the process of developing new technology that links the yacht design with sail design.
