Working with Sailmakers

Developing a high performance sail involves a variety of activities. Drawing and developing an initial sail-shape prototype, manufacturing, testing on a boat, and modifying and re-testing until the sail performs as desired.

The use of computer simulation significantly improves this sail-design loop, by giving the sail maker the ability to review the performance of designed sails prior to manufacturing. This is where AZURE Project comes in, offering a complete design and simulation solution. The AZUREProject User Group comprises of more than 80 designers and sailcloth manufacturers worldwide, including groups such as Ullman and Hood Sailmakers.

Technological Partners
SMAR Azure works closely with its customers, be them licencees of its software modules or users of its consulting services.

Software Training
We have found that our customer’s benefit greatly from attending training sessions in the use of our technology products. Training sessions are run by an experienced SMAR Azure engineer and focus on various aspects of sail-design and analysis. Each course will concentrate on how the SMAR Azure software can be best used to satisfy your specific requirements.
Training courses can be held at SMAR Azure’s Head Office in Edinburgh or at your premises. To find out more email info@smar-azure.com.

Consutancy Services
SMAR Azure can work with you in your design – helping you in the development and optimazation of single sails, or an entire sail plan. AZUREProject's built-in analytical tools allow our customers to analyze with accuracy the aeroelastic behaviour of sails in any possible up-wind sailing conditions. SMAR Azure can provide a complete design file and, if required, a full report about the performance analysis calculations carried out to develop the particular sail.

SMAR Azure has also developed SA Evolution, a revolutionary technology that evolves the current fiber layout methods. By using the technology to virtually simulate the aeroelastic behaviour of sails and up-wind sailing conditions, it is possible to compare alternative fibers and layouts and develop the optimal fiber layout on the real sail shape.

Using this technology allows for a high degree of optimization of the sail fibres before the sail goes into production, making huge savings in both cost and time.
