Our latest tool brings a new level of science to the "art" of fiber layouts.

SA Evolution

Previously an area of sail design notorious for "hit and miss", string sail fiber layouts and fiber content certainly deserve a serious scientific approach. But until now, the tools with which to optimize the layout and fiber content were simply not available to the independent sail designer.

Now, by virtually simulating the aero-elastic behaviour of sails in up-wind sailing conditions, comparing alternative fibers and layouts, and analyzing the resulting sail shapes, the optimal fiber layout distribution can be achieved.

1) Based on your design, the aerodynamic forces acting on the sail are computed, taking into account the presence and influence of the deck, the interaction of the main and headsail, as well as the infuence of the sails'
wake (trailing vortex).

2) Then a 3D non linear structural analysis is undertaken, computing the sail's distorted flying shape, and the stress distribution, taking into account the initial fiber layout, content and modulus.

3) Possible variations in sail performance due to changes in the flying sail shape are estimated using 3D aero-elastic analysis.

4) An evaluation of the results enables the final optimization of the fiber layout, fiber content and modulus needed to ensure top performance for your design shape.

"SA - Evolution" is now available either as a Design Consultancy Service (undertaken by us on your behalf, based on your submitted design), or as an additional tool, to be used by you in conjunction with your Azure Project software.
