SMAR Azure works closely with sail-makers, designers and racers to develop software programs that improve quality standards, manufacturing processes and the relationship with the final customers. Their programs are recognised as the best integrated design and optimization solution in sail design currently available in the market and allow for any kind of sail-shape and dimension, including gaff sails.
Dr Sabrina Malpede and Dr Alessandro Rosiello founded SMAR Azure in February 2001 to utilise the award winning technologies developed by Dr. Malpede during her doctorate. The root of the company goes back to 1997, with the doctoral study of Dr. Malpede. Dr. Donald MacVicar joined the company in the 2004 and since then has been enhancing the technology and developing the company products.
With the addition of further engineers and technologists, SMAR Azure is now a multicultural organisation combining Italian design flair and Scottish engineering expertise. SMAR Azure can communicate with partners and customers in English, Italian, Spanish and French, making working relationships more productive and knowledge transfer easier.
Dr. Sabrina Malpede is the co-founder and Managing Director of SMAR Azure Ltd. For the past ten years, she has been involved in sail-design, at first for her doctorate and then within SMAR Azure for the development of products and services required by the Industry. She was awarded by the Royal Society of Edinburgh and Scottish Enterprise with the Enterprise fellowship in 2003. In 2004, she won the SMART:Scotland Award for the development of an innovative technology for sail & mast design that is now part of the technology owned by SMAR Azure Ltd. She is a graduate with honours in Aeronautical Engineering at the University of Naples (Italy) and has a Ph.D. in Sail Design from the University of Glasgow (UK).
Dr. A. Rosiello is the other co-founder of SMAR Azure Ltd. He is a business economist and brings expertise in business and financial strategy. Acting as business development director, he assists mainly with business development, marketing research and financial management.
Dr Donald MacVicar is a Software Engineer with a BEng in Electronic and Software Engineering and a PHD in Computing Science, both from the University of Glasgow. He is a very keen sailor and competes in many of the major UK and Irish yachting events each year.
Stephen Jordan joined Smar-Azure in 2007 as a Software Developer after graduating from the University of Edinburgh with a degree in Computational Physics.
Francesco Nasato, R&D manager, is an aerospace engineer from University of Padova. He attended a Yacht Design Msc at Istituto Europeo di Design in Venice under the supervision of Davide Tagliapietra. He is a keen sailor and regularly competes in major off-shore sail races in Italy and Scotland.
